Abstract:

Washington State Community College is at a point of transition regarding distance learning, and through the Course ReVisioning Grant, will continue to move on to the next level of development. Since the mid 1990s, WSCC has progressed from offering e-mail correspondence courses to adopting an open source e-learning management system. WSCC is currently endeavoring to gain approval through the Higher Learning Commission to offer complete degrees in an online format. To accomplish this, WSCC intends to transform many current face-to-face and hybrid courses into fully online courses incorporating an improved open source platform such as Sakai or Moodle.

Goals:
  • To help WSCC faculty and staff (Learning Community members) become increasingly effective in tapping the power of technology for teaching and deep learning.

  • To explore best practices and theoretical underpinnings of teaching and learning pedagogy and work to apply these principles in online education.

  • To make ReVisioned course more flexible for delivery to a diverse body of students with various committments and levels of diability.

  •  To improve the skill set of those faculty and administrators involved leading to a diffusion process in which those faculty champions become role models and change agents across the college at large.

Resources Created: Shared Statewide

Members of the learning community will explore collaborative and cooperative learning, online assessments, project based learning, and learning for capability. A particular focus of the project will be the issue of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance and how to best support online faculty and students with disabilities. A wide range of technologies will be explored including, but not limited to, open source learning management systems such as Sakai and Moodle. Additionally, members of the learning community will explore new innovative ways of integrating certain technologies within these learning plateforms. The results of these explorations will be shared statewide at the OLN Southeast Regional Center learning institute and the OLN Learning Communities Expo.
